Rye Derby & Healthy Kids Day
RYE, NY [May 2, 2024] On Sunday morning, April 28, the streets of Rye were briefly taken over by more than 600 runners, walkers and even babies in strollers during the 36th Annual Rye Derby. There were teams dressed in matching t-shirts and creative costumes, including a flutter of butterflies, a swarm of yellow bumblebees, and a group of gondoliers sporting fake mustaches and striped outfits.
They were all there to raise funds for the Rye YMCA’s Y Cares Financial Assistance Program, which provides subsidies for summer camp, child care, programs, and memberships to those who need a helping hand. In 2023 alone, the Rye Y awarded over $403,000 to 653 families and individuals so everyone could experience all the Y has to offer, regardless of their economic circumstance.
Known for attracting world-class athletes, local runners, and families, the Derby is a rite of spring in Rye. The day kicked off with 5-Mile and 5K road races, which wound their way in a loop through the city. The 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk started later in the morning. In-between and after the races, participants and community members enjoyed family-friendly activities, snacks and grilled chicken sandwiches during Healthy Kids Day festivities in the Y’s parking lot.
“We’re so grateful to everyone who made the Derby and Healthy Kids a success,” stated Rye Y CEO Sabrina Murphy. “We couldn’t have done it without our generous sponsors, dedicated staff and volunteers, and of course, the runners, walkers and rollers!”
