Every person who walks through the Rye YMCA’s doors has a story to tell.
Whether it’s an elderly woman learning to swim for the first time, or a middle-aged man taking control of his health through our Diabetes Prevention Program, or a teenager who landed her first job as a camp counselor, we are constantly inspired by the people we meet here.
In the fall of 2012, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Rye Y members, staff and volunteers shared their personal stories, from the back stories that brought them to the Y to the successes and challenges encountered on the road to healthy living. It was all part of the Y’s first “Voices from the Community: The Rye Y Story Project.”
Over the course of two days, members sat down with staff interviewers in a “story booth” built out of a large gym mat. Modeled loosely on StoryCorps, a national non-profit oral history project, “
