The Rye Y is excited to offer the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), expanding its reach to help more community members lead healthier lives.  The program is free if you are enrolled in Medicare Part B.

Nearly half of Americans 65 and older have prediabetes, putting them at higher risk for type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. The Medicare DPP provides support to people with prediabetes, helping them make lasting changes and improve their health.

The yearlong program provides weekly one-hour core sessions for up to six months, followed by monthly sessions to reinforce new habits. Participants receive guidance from a trained lifestyle coach and encouragement from peers working toward similar goals. Together, they tackle topics such as stress management, goal setting, and overcoming challenges, helping participants sustain their progress over time. The Medicare DPP is part of the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The Rye Y is proud to be recognized by both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to bring this impactful program to our community

“Prediabetes affects so many people in our community,” said Heidy Barros, Senior Director of Health and Wellness. “This program offers a real chance to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and build a healthier lifestyle.”

The program has already transformed lives. A recent participant shared:

“I’m learning how to eat healthier and change my overall lifestyle. When you’re diagnosed with prediabetes, it can feel overwhelming. This program has taught me balance. Now, I’m walking daily, enjoying Zumba classes, and involving my whole family in healthier eating habits.”
