I live in Harrison and I’ve been a member of the Rye Y for about 1 ½ years. I first came to the Y because of the pools. I wanted to get back into swimming. I was a lifeguard for 13 years, from the age of 15. I was on a swim team from the time I was a young child. I swam at Hilltop Swim Club in Yonkers. The funny thing was, it was well over a year before I even got to the pool. There were so many other great activities and group classes.
After I joined, I would come three to five times a week for Zumba, Pilates, and weight lifting. I also went to a yoga retreat at the Wainwright House. I wanted to keep fit after having kids. I eventually started swimming and using the daycare when the kids were out of school. The Y’s bike incentive program inspired me to start biking here in the spring. And then I learned about the Westchester Triathlon from a flyer posted at the Y. I did that triathlon—my first- in September 2012.
I’ve lost 12 pounds of baby fat that I was having trouble shedding. As soon as I came here, I liked the facilities. I also like the hours, the community, the pool and the group classes. Everything’s based around health, fitness and wellness. Every time I come, there’s something new to do with the family. My five-year old son went to camp this summer and loved it. He learned to swim here. As a mother of two young children, if I get 20 minutes, I come here. It’s something I do for me. It’s part of my life now.
