One of my assignments in my early childhood certificate program a few years ago was to observe an after-school program. I did that here. A couple years later, I heard that Child Watch was hiring and I started working here in 2017. It’s a lot of fun to work in Child Watch. I’ve been working with kids since I was 17 – I’m 25 now. It is creative and relaxed and makes me appreciate life a little more. I like to do art with them and read stories to them. I definitely like to play with them.
My co-workers are really nice – especially Chiara. She gives me advice and encourages me to try new things. I would tell her if I was timid when trying new things. She would say, “Just count to 10 and then just say it.” Her experience, encouragement, advice and comforting words have helped me feel confident in myself. She has a phrase that she goes by and that is “You can do anything you set your mind to.”
Eventually, I would like to become an art coordinator and a teacher assistant. My other goal is I’d like to become a part-time swim instructor here, while still working in Child Watch. I want to try something new before getting a full-time job. I would encourage all young employees to keep their opinions open and try new things while they are figuring out their career. You never know what jobs would be interesting at the YMCA.
