Before I came to the Rye Y, I was working primarily at an afterschool program at a YMCA branch in Pleasantville (YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester). When that program shut down, my boss referred me to the Rye Y and I started working at the summer camp here. That was four summers ago. At first I was just a counselor and then I became group leader and I loved that.
I loved Discovery camp. It was very different from working at my other job. The program had more structure. The activities are separated into fun 45-minute time zones. Everyone was so welcoming. I especially liked teaching swim classes. The counselors have to do the same swim tests as the kids. There are several different strokes we had to do. I was surprised that I ended up being a low level. Then I made my way up too – just like the kids did! We were taught so we could teach the kids. I loved that. The kids get so excited about moving up to the next color cap. They can’t wait to go home tell their parents. And now I see them here taking swim classes and some of them are already up to Stage 5!
I graduated from college with a business degree and wanted a job in the business field. I’m planning to go to graduate school and needed something part time. I spoke with Kathy (Lynam) and she said there was a Member Services position available. I’ve been here now two months and it is perfect for me. Everyone is super friendly. The Y has four core values that we always instill – respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. I see that every day.
