My family became members a few years ago because my sister was pre-diabetic. We joined as an outlet for exercise and to get healthier. We didn’t like the gyms in Port Chester and came here one day and liked it. Everyone is happy and smiling. I aged out of my family’s membership but now I’m back as a staff member.
I’m the Community Health Assistant and we do evidence based programs – We have LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, we have the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, we have Blood Pressure Monitoring Program, we are going to do a Walk with Ease program for arthritis. And you don’t have to be a member to do these programs, which I love. I love helping people and that is what the Y is doing through these programs.
I’ve been here just a couple weeks. It’s been a blur so far. When I got home after the first day my mom said “How was orientation?” I said “orientation?” I was just put to work!” It’s great. I jumped right in! I’m learning as I’m going. Heidy is a great mentor – any questions, I can ask her. She walks me through everything. She’s helping me grow both professionally and as a person which I admire. I love it!
It is like a family here – I appreciate that. You are not shamed like some gyms you go to. There’s not that fear. Everyone here is willing to help you.
