RYE Y STORY PROJECT: PAMELA V.

PamelaMy experience at the Rye YMCA began when I worked my first job as a summer camp counselor at the Osborn School location. It was absolutely fantastic. This opportunity opened my eyes to how much I enjoyed working with children. At the end of the summer, I was invited to join the aquatics team at the Y. I joined aquatics and I haven’t looked back!

Since I started working here at the Y, I have been able to gain experience working with children of different age levels. I began working with mainly elementary age children and I have also had the opportunity to teach baby classes as well.

I raised my daughter at the Rye Y. I have been bringing her here ever since I can remember. I am amazed at how she began swimming in the baby classes and has now seen her way through the swim program at five years old. I have learned so much about all of the different programs the Y offers to the community by raising my child here. I’ve been able to learn about gym classes with her. She’s also been involved in gymnastics and chess club. She can now beat me at chess!

I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many people here that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. The community here is so engaging and I’ve felt welcomed here since I was young. I’ve found mentors in not only staff but in members as well.

I don’t believe I would have been able to expose my daughter to half of what she has experienced if it wasn’t for the Y. I am amazed at how inclusive our community is and that there is something here for everyone. I appreciated the Y before I was a mother, but after I became a mom, it became even more valuable.
