RYE Y STORY PROJECT: EMILY

16-EmilyMeszkatI joined the Rye Y in October 2014 after relocating from NYC with my husband and three young children. Prior to moving, I was a working mom, with small children and had absolutely no time to exercise. Once settled here in Rye, I checked out the Y (everyone kept telling me how amazing it was!) and decided to join with a Family Membership. I told my husband that if we did in fact join, I would commit to coming every day. So beginning on November 1, 2014 that’s exactly what I did!

Initially, I was intimidated walking into the Fitness Center, as it had been a long time since I exercised. What really drew me in to start was the Tot Drop. I had no babysitter and the fact that my children would be in a safe and wonderful environment made me feel like I could spend an hour taking care of myself. I started off slowly by walking 20 minutes each day on the treadmill. Over time I became more and more comfortable and increased my work-out intensity. I started meeting new people and making new friends. The Y started to feel like home. I increasingly became more confident as over time, I shed over 20 pounds by participating in many of the group classes offered. I now spin two times a week, I take Yvette’s kickboxing class and I’m running four miles at a time. But the best part is I still haven’t taken advantage of all the Y has to offer and it won’t stop here for me…I still want to try Pilates, JT’s class, use The Wainwright and I even want to start swimming again.

Although this is not a dramatic story, the Rye Y has dramatically changed my life. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in, I love the new friendships I’ve formed, the flexible hours, the convenience of its location and especially the special women of the Tot Drop for my children. I’ve even just discovered the luxury of an uninterrupted shower after my workouts! It’s such a loving and wonderful environment that has completely changed my life. Now when people move here, I tell them they must join the Y!

The Y is a community. People recognize me. The friendly faces at the front desk know me and say hello every time I walk in the door. It’s a true community that holds a special place in my heart. My final fitness frontier is JT’s class!

The Rye Y is the best part of moving to Rye!
