Rye Y Story Project: John

John-CaI became a member of the Rye Y in 1980 and have never looked back. I always love coming to the Y and taking the group exercise classes. Sometimes I am the only guy in the class but that doesn’t stop me! The Y was really there for me after I hurt my knee during hurricane Irene. I tore ligaments and my doctor told me physical therapy in a pool would be very helpful. The Y’s two pools were perfect for me.

Before my injury, I had retired from my job of 37 years. During my rehab sessions at the pool, I realized I wanted to give back to the Y in some way. So, at age 60 I decided to take the lifeguarding class that the Y offers. I passed the test and the Y hired me as a lifeguard! I worked in the pool for two years as the 5 a.m. opener.

Now I’ve moved over to the Membership Department but I still come to work out at least four times a week. I am still at the Y because the staff is very friendly and I just love being here. I really enjoy the exercise classes and they keep me in good health. If I am not working at the Membership desk, you can find me in the exercise studio jumping around with the ladies!
