Rye Y Story Project: Andrea

andreaIn 2011, my aunt became very ill after a long battle with ovarian and breast cancer. At that time, I worked for an organization that did not offer a balance between work and life although they preached that they did. In order to be able to spend more time with my aunt, I decided to take a leave of absence. That decision helped me realize that life was short and remaining at that particular organization was limiting. I began looking for a more fulfilling position that would allow me to give back and help others. I wanted to be happy again!

Working for the Rye Y is a perfect fit. My brother and I grew up at the White Plains YMCA and in later years, so did my daughter. She now also works for the Rye Y and like me, she loves coming to work.

As the Rye Y’s Human Resources Director, I get to help others thrive. In May of 2012, I received my MA in Psychology. I enrolled in that specific program because I enjoy learning about human behavior and development. The Y is a place where I have an opportunity to be empathetic and understanding with people, especially those who need a little extra attention.

I am ecstatic to say that I have been fortunate to meet a myriad of diverse individuals during my employment here and have built relationships with many I now call good friends. The Rye Y is not just a place of work. I love it here!
