I have been a member of the YMCA since I was a youngster in Chicago. We moved to Rye in 1992, joined as a young family and have been here ever since. I’ve been everything from a parent in Gym and Swim to pursuing my own fitness to being on the board and executive committees. Now I’m happily retired.
The Rye Y is a good community organization; it truly serves every constituent. Young toddlers, teens, adults, families and seniors all have a program or reason to come here. Not many organizations can touch all those groups.
The Y has been a very positive experience for us – totally different now than it was 20 years ago. In the early 80s we didn’t know if it would survive. We didn’t really serve our community then. There was one pool, a gym with a linoleum floor, one universal weight machine. Fast forward twenty years and we are a vital part of the community.
