Rye Y Story Project: Lisa U.

LisaMy husband and I moved to Rye as newlyweds 20 years ago. The first thing we did was join the Y. When we started a family the Y became an even bigger part of our lives. I experienced Mommy and Me classes with all my three of my boys – Ellen Watermelon, Baby & Me Gym, Parent/Child Swim. The Y is where they learned to swim. My husband and I both love the flexibility of working out in the fitness center. I’ve exercised at various times of the day and night – at opening and closing. When one of my sons was involved with crew, I would drop him off and come to the Y at 5:30 am. I enjoy the different rhythms of the Y in the morning, daytime and evening.

My volunteer work brought me to my current position. I was co-chairing the Milton school wellness committee and started working with the Y on projects like the Complete Streets Workshop, School Gardens and Distracted Walking/Driving. Now I am the Community Outreach Coordinator and help advance our health and wellness initiatives by collaborating with other non-profits, elected officials school administrators, city planners/engineers, teachers and parents.

I love coming to work and tapping into the talent of our staff and members – there is such a wealth of expertise here! I feel like we’re truly making a difference by encouraging our families and youth to lead healthy lives.
