Dozens of seniors took steps towards better health at the Rye Y’s Senior Health and Fitness Day on Tuesday, May 30. The free event was open to the community and a culmination of the Rye Y’s month long celebration of Active Older Adults Month. The Rye Y hopes to encourage older adults to develop healthy behaviors including healthy eating, physical activity and social interaction.
Senator George Latimer kicked off the day with a lunch-time talk, which was followed by an afternoon of movement and fun. Seniors had a choice of several classes to sample, including Tai Chi, Zumba, Mindful Color, Enhance Fitness, Chair Yoga and more. The Rye Y’s Active Older Adult Advocate Penny Cozza remarked “We had a great turnout of enthusiastic seniors who were eager to try different fitness activities. I was gratified to hear several people say that the afternoon has inspired them to become more active, which is exactly what we hoped for.”
