Over 325 adults and children participated in a day of health awareness and fun at the 6th Annual Access to Care Health Fair, held Saturday, August 10 at Open Door Family Medical Centers in Mamaroneck. The event was organized by the Rye Y and other community-based organizations.
While the majority of participants came from Mamaroneck, the free event also attracted residents of Larchmont, New Rochelle, Harrison, White Plains, Mount Vernon and Port Chester. During the course of the day, they took advantage of a range of health screenings and services, including blood pressure checks, dental and vision assessments, HIV screenings, diabetes and stroke risk assessments, and more. Mindful of last year’s torrential rain, organizers held the 2019 fair under Open Door’s covered parking lot. Exams or testing that required privacy were conducted inside the facility.
Fun activities, including a bouncy castle and face painting, kept kids engaged while their parents or caregivers consulted with healthcare providers. And there were plenty of give-aways—from healthy snacks to vital information about health, wellness and community resources. One hundred backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed courtesy of Family Services of Westchester and the Mamaroneck Rotary Club.
“Our goal is help people take control of their health,” remarked Heidy Barros, Community Health Coordinator at the Rye YMCA. “Knowing your numbers, understanding what they mean, and learning about available resources are important first steps to a healthy life.”
