On Sunday, April 29, join Derby Founder Eamonn Coghlan, Irish Senator, 3-time Olympian and former world champion, for the 30th Anniversary of the Rye Derby Road Race. A signature community event, the Derby combines road races for all ages with Healthy Kids Day activities in a fun-filled celebration of family, community and health. More than 1,000 people participate in the races and related festivities.
The Derby includes a 5-Mile Championship Road Race, 5K Road Race, and 1-Mile Healthy Fun Run/Walk. An Award Ceremony follows the 5-Mile Championship and 5K Road Races.
Derby sponsorships support the Y Cares Financial Assistance Program, which enable us to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can’t pay. In 2017 alone, the Rye Y awarded nearly $418,000 in financial assistance to individuals and families in need. Thanks to our Y Cares program, children can thrive at summer camp. Working parents can afford safe, nurturing child care. And seniors can maintain their health through subsidized memberships.
Proceeds from the Derby also support the Rye Y’s community initiatives, which include pedestrian safety, senior health and fitness, chronic disease prevention and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, to name a few.
This year, the Rye Y kicks off Derby Goes Green, a social responsibility initiative to reduce waste, increase recycling and raise environmental awareness at the Derby and Healthy Kids Day. Healthy Kids Day is a national YMCA initiative to improve the health and well-being of all children. Nearly 1,400 YMCAs nation-wide will participate!
On Sunday, April 29, 2018, the Rye YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day in conjunction with our 30th Annual Rye Derby. The Y’s parking lot will be filled with FREE family-friendly activities designed to keep kids moving, playing and learning. Our local sponsors will provide health and wellness-related information and give-aways for the whole family (including pets!). Families can also enjoy a free lunch, healthy snacks and frozen yogurt for dessert!
